Circumetnea Railway: the most authentic train journey around Mount Etna
Introduction: a historic railway around Mount Etna
The Circumetnea Railway is not just a train — it’s one of the most unique travel experiences in Sicily.
Built at the end of the 19th century, this historic railway was designed to connect the small towns around Mount Etna and make it easier to transport goods and people to the city of Catania. Construction began in 1889, and by 1898 the full line was completed, linking Catania to the seaside town of Riposto.
Its main goal was simple but essential:
to connect remote Etna villages and open them to the rest of Sicily.
A unique train journey around Mount Etna
The Circumetnea is one of the few railways in Europe that almost completely circles an active volcano.
The route stretches for about 110 km and offers an incredible variety of landscapes:
- black lava fields
- vineyards and citrus groves
- pistachio fields around Bronte
- medieval villages built in lava stone
- panoramic views of the Ionian coast
This is not a tourist train — it’s still used by locals.
And that’s exactly what makes it special: it’s a real, authentic Sicilian experience.
Important update (2026)
In recent years, the Circumetnea railway has undergone significant changes.
The historic departure point from Borgo station in Catania is no longer fully operational for the railway, as part of the line has been replaced by the metro/bus system.
Today, doing the full Circumetnea experience requires combining:
- metro
- replacement buses
- train
This is part of a broader modernization of transport in Catania, but the experience remains just as fascinating.
