Sicily: A Journey Through History, Nature, and Culture

Sicily, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and diverse attractions, often surprises travelers with its size. Covering an area of 25,711 square kilometers, the island is the largest in the Mediterranean. However, getting from one place to another isn’t always straightforward. Winding roads, mountainous terrain, and the desire to avoid rushing through this beautiful region can make travel times longer than expected.

This 10-day itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your time without spending hours behind the wheel. By focusing on key destinations and grouping nearby attractions, you’ll experience the best of Sicily—from bustling cities to serene countryside and picturesque coastal towns—while keeping driving times manageable. Whether it’s exploring Baroque towns, ancient ruins, or volcanic landscapes, this plan offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation for a memorable Sicilian journey.

Day 1: Arrival in Palermo

Arrive at Palermo Airport and pick up your rental car. Explore Palermo: Norman Palace, Cathedral, and Ballarò market on your own.
Suggested Activities: Join a walking tour of Palermo to explore the historic center, including the Cathedral, Quattro Canti, and the Ballarò market, or take a Palermo Street Food Tour – taste panelle, arancina, and cannoli.
Overnight: Palermo.
Driving: Airport to city center (~35 min, 30 km).

Day 2: Palermo & Monreale

Morning: Visit Monreale Cathedral.
Afternoon: Continue exploring Palermo (Teatro Massimo, Quattro Canti) on your own.

Day 3: Palermo to Cefalù

Day 5: Agrigento to Piazza Armerina & Ragusa

Stop at Piazza Armerina to see the Roman mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale. Continue to Ragusa and explore Ragusa Ibla in the evening on your own.
Suggested Activities: Explore the mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale with a guided tour. Afternoon: Discover Ragusa Ibla with a local expert to learn about its Baroque architecture.
Overnight: Ragusa.
Driving: Agrigento to Piazza Armerina (~2 hours, 120 km), then to Ragusa (~1.5 hours, 90 km).

Day 6: Ragusa to Modica & Noto

Morning: Visit Modica for its Baroque architecture and chocolate. Afternoon: Explore Noto’s elegant Baroque streets on your own.
Suggested Activities: Tour Modica’s Baroque center and visit a chocolate workshop to learn about the town’s unique chocolate-making tradition. Afternoon: Take a guided walk through Noto, Sicily’s Baroque jewel, and visit its iconic Cathedral.
Overnight: Siracusa.
Driving: Ragusa to Modica (~30 min, 15 km), Modica to Noto (~40 min, 35 km), Noto to Siracusa (~1 hour, 40 km).

Day 7: Siracusa (Ortigia)

Spend the day in Ortigia: Duomo, Fonte Aretusa, and Maniace Castle. Visit the Archaeological Park with the Greek Theatre on your own.
Suggested Activities: Join a guided tour of Ortigia, visiting the Duomo, Fonte Aretusa, and Maniace Castle. Afternoon: Explore the Archaeological Park (Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius) with a licensed guide.

Overnight: Siracusa.
Driving: Minimal, city exploration (~0 km).

Day 8: Siracusa to Mount Etna & Taormina

Morning: Drive to Mount Etna for a hike or cable car ride. Afternoon: Continue to Taormina, visit the Greek Theatre and Isola Bella on your own.

Overnight: Taormina.

Day 9: Taormina to Palermo

Drive back to Palermo, stopping at scenic spots along the northern coast. Enjoy your last evening in Palermo.

Overnight: Palermo.
Driving: Taormina to Palermo (~3.5 hours, 260 km).

Day 10: Departure from Palermo

Drive to Palermo Airport and return your rental car.

Driving: City center to airport (~35 min, 30 km).
